A Peeling

Small Shelf in California Claro Walnut

This small shelf was crafted from a single block of walnut that was ripped, resawn and joined back together in a way that mimics the pages of a book bending open.  The light colored live edge of the sapwood at the front fades naturally into the deep colored heartwood.  Careful attention was paid to maintaining the continuous grain along both the top surface and curving underside.  A kintsugi inspired brass filling technique highlights and stabilizes a natural knot in the wood.
