Ebony Quilts
Art Objects in Ebony, Brass and Alaskan CedarEbony Quilt 1 and Ebony Quilt 2 were pieced together from tiny remnants gifted to me by a fellow woodworker. Too precious for me to let them go and too small and irregular for normal use, I worked them together into their own cohesive objects. Drawing on visual ideas, ethos and concepts found in the craft of quilting and the repair technique of kintsugi, I “quilted” together these two forms using fine brass powder and adhesive after carefully arranging the ebony segments. Each piece that comprises these quilts are as they were originally given to me–nothing cut or reshaped to fit. Their new forms convey the beauty and preciousness I feel in each tiny scrap; elevating and bringing to attention what would often otherwise be discarded.
Ebony Quilt 1 and Ebony Quilt 2 were made during my time at the Museum for Art in Wood as a resident fellow in their 2024 Windgate Arts Residency Program (WARP). They were on display at the museum in the exhibition “Fruition”. Ebony Quilt 1 has since been acquired by the museum as part of their permanent collection.
